How We Restore Your Sash Window Functionality

Our repair process is designed to be as non-invasive as possible, preserving the historic timber of your property. We carefully open the internal box pockets to access the mechanism without damaging the surrounding interior plaster or external brickwork. By removing old or damaged ropes, we can install high-quality, wax-impregnated cotton sash cords that are specifically chosen for their durability and authentic performance in period window maintenance.

02

Professional Counterweight Rebalancing for Smooth Operation

We do not simply replace the sash cord; we perform a comprehensive check of the internal mechanics. Our team inspects and rebalances the cast iron or lead counterweights to ensure the window remains perfectly poised, preventing it from dropping or sticking. We also examine the pulley stiles and parting beads to ensure every part of the mechanism is functioning as intended, restoring the reliable movement your period windows were designed to have.

Terry and son were courteous, tidy, with competitive rates, and took obvious pride in their work. They went the extra mile to fix a problem with one of our frames, and all windows were finished to a high standard. We would not hesitate to recommend them."

Frequently Asked Questions About Sash Cord Replacement

Expert advice on snapped cords, counterweight rebalancing, and timber box frame servicing across South London.

Do you need to take the whole window out to fix a snapped cord?

+

We do not need to remove the entire box frame from the wall. We carefully remove the internal timber staff beads and the sliding sash itself to get to the "pocket pieces" in the side of the frame. This gives us access to the weights. Because we are specialists, we do this with minimal disruption to your interior paintwork or wallpaper.

Can you fix a sash window that has dropped or won't stay up?

+

Yes. This is usually a weight rebalancing issue. If a window has been repaired poorly in the past, or if the glass was replaced with a heavier version, the internal counterweights will be too light. We calculate the exact weight required and add lead make-weights to the system so the sash stays exactly where you leave it.

Is it worth draught-proofing while replacing the cords?

+

We highly recommend it. Since the window is already dismantled to replace the cords, adding a draught-proofing system is very cost-effective at this stage. It involves fitting discreet brush seals that close the gaps where air usually leaks through, significantly reducing street noise and heating bills in South West London homes.

What areas do you cover for emergency sash repairs?

+

From our Battersea workshop, we cover all of South West London and parts of Surrey within 15 miles. This includes Wandsworth, Lambeth, Richmond upon Thames, Merton, and Kingston. If you have a dropped sash or broken glass that leaves your property unsecure, we offer same-day emergency repairs from Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 18:00.

How long does it take to service a single window?

+

Replacing the cords and rebalancing a single window typically takes between one and two hours. If you are having a full service including draught-proofing and pulley maintenance, it may take a little longer. We always provide a clear, written quotation after a survey so you know exactly what to expect.
